A raccoon has tested positive for rabies on Keene Road in Acushnet, near the Freetown line.
Residents are urged to take precautions to protect their pets:
- 🐾 Make sure your dogs and cats are current on their rabies vaccinations.
- 🏡 Do not allow pets to roam or spend time outside unattended.
- 🦝 Keep your distance from wildlife and never approach or handle a wild animal, even if it appears sick, injured, or unusually friendly.
- ⚠️ If your pet has contact with—or is in close proximity to—a wild animal, contact your veterinarian or local animal control for guidance.
When a potential rabies exposure occurs, the wild animal may need to be tested. Domestic animals may also be subject to quarantine requirements depending on their vaccination status, and a rabies booster may be recommended.
