Country music has lost one of its most beloved voices. Singer-songwriter and actress Dolly Parton, whose glittering country music career grew into worldwide pop stardom and acclaimed work in film and television, died peacefully in Nashville on August 25, 2026. She was 80.

Her family did not release a cause of death, saying only that she “died peacefully today in Nashville.” The announcement was shared on Parton’s official Instagram in a video message from her nephew, Bryan Seaver, speaking on behalf of the Parton family.

Parton’s death comes after a period of health challenges that led her to cancel several public appearances and concerts during late 2025 and 2026. It also follows the death of her husband, Carl Dean, in March 2025. The couple had been married for nearly 60 years, sharing a remarkable life largely away from the glare of Parton’s extraordinary career.

Yet while her passing marks the end of an era, Dolly Parton leaves behind something far greater than a catalog of hit songs. She leaves a legacy of joy, generosity, resilience and kindness that touched generations of people around the world.

A Voice the World Will Never Forget

From her humble beginnings in the Tennessee mountains to sold-out stages around the globe, Parton built one of the most remarkable careers in entertainment history.

She wrote and recorded songs that became timeless classics, including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You.” Her music crossed boundaries between country and pop, helping transform her from a country music star into a global cultural icon.

Parton sold more than 100 million records worldwide and earned 11 Grammy Awards, along with major recognition for her work in film and television.

Her talents, however, went far beyond singing. As an actress, she became a beloved presence on the big screen, starring in films including 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Her warmth, humor and unmistakable personality made her just as memorable on screen as she was behind a microphone. She famously had a four decade long collaboration with Kenny Rogers and her music transcended the country genre.

A Career Built on Dreams

Parton’s success was remarkable not simply because of how much she achieved, but because of how far she traveled from her roots.

Born into a large, poor family in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, she grew up surrounded by music and learned early that songwriting could be a way to tell stories, express emotions and dream of something bigger.

She never forgot those beginnings.

Even as fame transformed her life, Parton continued to celebrate her Appalachian heritage and the values she learned growing up. Her career became a testament to the power of believing in yourself without losing sight of where you came from.

A Legacy of Giving

For all of Parton’s professional accomplishments, some of her most lasting work happened away from the entertainment spotlight.

She created Dollywood, turning her connection to the Smoky Mountains into a beloved destination celebrating family, music and Appalachian culture.

But perhaps her most meaningful contribution was the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the literacy program she founded to give free books to children. The initiative has helped millions of young children develop a love of reading and experience the simple joy of receiving a book of their own.

It was a fitting reflection of Parton herself: someone who understood that success meant little if it could not be used to help others.

More Than a Country Music Legend

Dolly Parton’s story was never simply about fame. It was about perseverance, imagination and generosity.

She could fill an arena with her music, make audiences laugh on a movie screen and write songs that could break your heart. But she could also make a child excited to receive a book in the mail.

That combination may be what made her so universally loved.

Her songs will continue to be sung. Her movies will continue to be watched. Children will continue discovering books through the program she created. And generations of fans will continue finding comfort, inspiration and happiness in the work she left behind.

Dolly Parton may be gone, but the things she gave the world—her music, her laughter, her generosity and her unmistakable spirit—will endure.

For millions of people, she was more than a country music legend.

She was a reminder that you can dream big without forgetting your roots, achieve extraordinary things without losing your kindness, and leave the world a little brighter than you found it.

And Dolly Parton spent 80 extraordinary years doing exactly that.
