ATTLEBORO — A fire in an eight-unit apartment building on Dean Street was contained Sunday afternoon after the building’s automatic sprinkler system activated, preventing the blaze from spreading to neighboring apartments.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, the Attleboro Fire Department responded to 23 Dean St. for a reported building fire.
When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the second floor of the high-occupancy apartment building. The building’s automatic sprinkler system had activated inside the affected apartment, helping contain the fire until crews arrived. Firefighters quickly extinguished the remaining flames.
The fire was confined to the apartment where it originated, although smoke and water damage affected other areas of the building.
“This incident is a perfect example of why properly maintained fire protection systems are so important,” said District Chief Scott Godin. “The sprinkler system activated as designed and kept the fire confined to a single apartment, significantly reducing the amount of damage and preventing the fire from spreading to the rest of the building.”
The building contains eight apartments. All residents were temporarily displaced while the property owner arranged temporary housing.
The Attleboro Fire Investigation Unit responded to determine the cause of the fire, while National Grid disconnected electrical service to the building.
No residents or firefighters were injured.
Firefighters remained at the scene until approximately 3:35 p.m.
