The first week of testimony in the Lindsay Clancy triple murder trial ended with some of the most emotional and graphic evidence jurors have seen so far.
On Friday, the jury toured key locations tied to the case, including the Clancy family’s former Duxbury home, before returning to court to hear testimony from two emergency room doctors who treated Clancy’s three children after they were rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth on Jan. 24, 2023.
Jurors also were shown close-up photographs of self-inflicted cuts to Clancy’s neck and wrists. Prosecutors argue the wounds were superficial, while the defense says the injuries — along with the amount of blood found in the bedroom — support its claim that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis and intended to take her own life.
Dr. Benjamin Kaufman testified that hospital staff briefly restarted 8-month-old Callan Clancy’s heart during lifesaving efforts, prompting an emotional reaction from Clancy in the courtroom. He told jurors Callan never regained the ability to breathe on his own and later died at Boston Children’s Hospital. His older siblings, 5-year-old Cora and 3-year-old Dawson, were pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the emergency room.
Prosecutors allege Clancy strangled her three children after sending her husband, Patrick, out on errands before attempting suicide by cutting herself and jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. The defense maintains Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.
The trial resumes next week and is expected to continue for several more weeks.
