An East Weymouth man faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, after allegedly driving his vehicle intentionally into two students during homecoming weekend at Bridgewater State University, authorities announced.
Steven Mayle, 44, was arraigned in Brockton District Court on charges stemming from the Saturday morning crash near the university’s Moakley Center on Burrill Avenue. Surveillance footage from the area captured Mayle’s vehicle steering directly toward the pedestrians.
Summary of Charges
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz confirmed the full list of charges filed against Mayle:
- Two counts of Attempted Murder
- Two counts of Assault to Murder
- Two counts of Leaving the Scene of Personal Injury
- One count of Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- One count of a Marked Lanes Violation
Authorities are also investigating Mayle’s potential involvement in an earlier, separate road rage incident involving a knife in nearby East Bridgewater on the same morning.
Victim Conditions and Court Findings
Both victims, enrolled students at Bridgewater State University, were taken to a local hospital following the crash. One student suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the second was treated for minor injuries. Investigators noted that Mayle has no known affiliation with the university and found no evidence that the two specific students were targeted.
During the court proceedings, Mayle audibly stated, “I’m so sorry,” as a plea of not guilty was formally entered on his behalf.
The judge ordered Mayle held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing and mandated that he undergo a mental health competency evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital. He is due back in court on October 23, 2026.
