An Abington woman has been indicted on charges stemming from the alleged physical abuse of her 2-month-old daughter, who suffered serious injuries and was later transferred to Boston for treatment.
Jillian Timmons, 34, was indicted Thursday by a Plymouth County grand jury on two counts of assault and battery on a child causing serious bodily injury and one count of reckless endangerment of a child.
According to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, the case began on July 17, when Timmons brought her daughter to South Shore Hospital for treatment. A mandated reporter at the hospital contacted authorities after becoming concerned that the infant had been physically abused.
The infant reportedly had a core body temperature of 93 degrees and bruising on both the left and right sides of her face. She was subsequently transported by medical helicopter to Boston Children’s Hospital for further treatment.
Authorities determined that the infant had suffered serious brain bleeds that were several days old. Prosecutors say the injuries were consistent with physical abuse and blunt force trauma.
According to the district attorney’s office, the injuries were so severe that the infant may never be able to walk, speak, feed herself or care for herself independently.
Massachusetts State Police then conducted a weeks-long investigation. Investigators developed probable cause and arrested Timmons on July 30, according to prosecutors.
The grand jury indictment was returned Thursday, after Timmons’ arrest.
Timmons is expected to be arraigned in Brockton Superior Court at a later date. The charges are allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
