What began as a small effort to help students who walk to school has grown into a citywide opportunity for New Bedford students to ride.
Kerrie Souza, NBPS Lead Behaviorist, and Principal David Mather of Keith Middle School partnered to create a bike rental program for students who walk to school. The program got its start when Yesteryear Cyclery, Inc. donated 25 used bicycles. Although some of the bikes needed repairs and funding was limited, the school launched the program with three student renters.
The initiative received a major boost when Senator Mark Montigny’s office stepped in with a grant through Dennison Memorial, helping formally incorporate and expand the bike program.
“Due to their incredible generosity, we were able to receive bikes, helmets, locks, repair equipment, tools, parts, and supplies and expand those resources to Normandin Middle School, Roosevelt Middle School, Trinity Day Academy, Whaling City Jr. Sr. High School, and New Bedford High School,” said Souza.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Yesteryear, Audra Riding, Dennison Memorial, and Senator Montigny for his generosity and commitment to giving kids the opportunity to ride.”
What started with just three student renters has grown into a broader program providing bicycles, safety equipment, and resources to students across New Bedford Public Schools—helping more young people access a healthy, affordable, and empowering way to get around.
