ATTLEBORO — Attleboro firefighters responded to a multi-vehicle crash involving a dump truck and a hazardous materials spill on Interstate 95 Thursday morning, quickly containing a large diesel fuel leak before it could spread further.
At approximately 8:19 a.m., Attleboro Fire crews were dispatched to the area of mile marker 2.5 on I-95 North, near Exit 2.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a crash involving two sedans, an SUV and a dump truck. The dump truck sustained damage to its fuel tank, resulting in a significant diesel fuel leak. A large amount of the fuel flowed into a nearby storm drain.
Firefighters immediately established a dam around the spill and storm drain to prevent the fuel from spreading and causing additional contamination.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was called to the scene to assist with the investigation and remediation of the spill.
One occupant of the vehicles was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with what is believed to be a minor injury. The vehicles involved sustained minor damage.
The Massachusetts State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
Attleboro firefighters cleared the scene at approximately 9:40 a.m.
“Thanks to the swift actions of our Attleboro Fire crew, this unfortunate diesel spill was contained,” said Attleboro Fire Chief Scott T. Lachance. “The storm drain and impacted surface area were dammed up by our firefighters to prevent the fuel from spreading further and causing more contamination. Thank you to our partners at the DEP who responded and are now managing the remediation of the diesel spill.”
