NEW BEDFORD — September 20, 2026: The New Bedford Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a structure fire at 1500 Acushnet Avenue, Gouveia’s Grill, where crews were met with heavy smoke coming from the first-floor restaurant of a four-story mixed-use residential and commercial building.
Upon arrival, Command Unit 1 reported heavy smoke showing from the restaurant. Engine 8 immediately advanced an attack line through the rear of the building, while Ladder 4 entered through the front to access the residential floors above and conduct search and rescue operations.
Engine 9 quickly established a continuous water supply for suppression operations and assisted Engine 7 in deploying additional hose lines to support the primary fire attack and Ladder 4’s search efforts.
Due to the size and configuration of the building, Command requested an additional engine company. Engine 1 responded to deploy additional hose lines to the upper floors and help prevent the fire from extending into the residential apartments and adjoining tenant spaces.
At the same time, Ladder 1 positioned its aerial ladder to the upper floors while crews deployed ground ladders to additional windows, providing critical access for the rescue of residents or firefighters if needed.
Through the coordinated efforts of the companies on scene, Engine 8 quickly knocked down the fire, significantly limiting damage to the restaurant and, critically, preventing the fire from extending into the residential apartments and neighboring tenant spaces.
Because of the building’s size and layout, firefighters remained on scene for several hours to ventilate smoke and toxic gases from the residential areas.
New Bedford Emergency Management was requested, along with the American Red Cross, to assist nearly 30 residents who were temporarily displaced.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the New Bedford Fire Investigation Unit.
Thanks to the strong work and coordinated response of the firefighters on scene, all displaced tenants were able to return to their homes as of today.
