Nina Busnengo reached a plea agreement in July and was sentenced Monday to 2½ to 3 years in state prison for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury. She was also sentenced to three years for larceny from a person, to be served consecutively.
Busnengo was given credit for 722 days already served and was also sentenced to three years of probation.
The case stems from the August 20, 2024, death of Stephen Oswald, who was found suffering from a serious head injury outside Seabra Foods on Rockdale Avenue in New Bedford.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Busnengo was accused of stomping on Oswald’s head during the early-morning assault.
First responders found Oswald at the scene, where he was pronounced dead.
The case initially involved assault-related charges before prosecutors later filed a new criminal complaint charging Busnengo with murder. She was ordered held without bail following that filing.
The fatal assault occurred outside the grocery store on Rockdale Avenue, where police investigated the death on Aug. 20, 2024.
